it was his experiences in Illyefalva that inspired the writer Dezs? Szabó to write his famous novel “The Abandoned Village” (1919)?

By car

Illyefalva – and the villages of Sepsiszentkirály and Aldoboly, which form a single municipality – are most easily reached by road. It is 7 km from the county town of Sepsiszentgyörgy (Sfîntu Gheorghe), 25 km from Braşov (Brassó), 200km from Bucharest and 260 km from Cluj-Napoca. The settlement is located in the southern part of Kovászna (Covasna) county.

If you have a GPS, here are the coordinates for Illyefalva:

  • Latitude: N 45:47:32N (45.7923)
  • Longitude: E 25:46:16 (25.7712)

Coming from Cluj-Napoca, take the E60 national motorway in the direction of Marosvásárhely (Tîrgu Mures), Segesvár (Sighisoara), Brassó (Brasov); after Kőhalom (Rupea) turn off to the left at Bodfalutelep (Colonia Bod), go through Szászhermány (Harman) in the direction of Sepsiszentgyörgy (Sf. Gheorghe) along county road 112. The first village in the county is Aldoboly (Dobolii de Jos), and Illyefalva is the next one after that. After the turn-off at Földvár (Feldioara) the road quality deteriorates. Arriving in Kovászna county, when you reach the first settlement, Hídvég (Haghig), take a right at the fork in the road in the direction of Sepsiszentgyörgy, and then in Árapatak (Araci) turn left, once again in the direction of Sepsiszentgyörgy. After Előpatak (Valcele), the next settlement is the county town of Sepsiszentgyörgy; once there, go right at the first roundabout. The next village after that is Illyefalva.

By railway

Those who prefer to travel by train should be aware that the railway station named Illyefalva (Ilieni) is farther away from the village than the Sepsiszentgyörgy station, and the only way to get there is on foot through the fields. Therefore, if you wish to come by train, we recommend that you buy a ticket for Sepsiszentgyörgy (Sf. Gheorghe), along the main line no. 400, and from there you can take one of the regular bus services to the village. If you have reserved accommodation in Illyefalva or Sepsiszentkirály (Sâncraiu) and are coming by train, ask your host, who will more than likely help arrange for you reach the village from the Szentgyörgy railway station. It is quite easy to reach Sepsiszentgyörgy by railway, as there are several lines serving the Sekler region from Brasov, and the international ‘Korona’ express from Hungary also stops there.
