It was at the age of seven that the Júlia Simó, now director of the nationally and even internationally renowned sewing centre sewed her first pair of trousers. Ms Simó has turned her business into a specialist in making stylised versions of the traditional dress of Transylvanian nobles and burghers. The sewing centre is located in the Séra mansion, a listed heritage building. According to the spirit behind the Rustica house, “we are the ones who write history”, that is to say, it matters what it is that we preserve and hand down to the next generations. “We need always to uphold the spiritual values underlying agricultural work”, declares the entrepreneur, who was trained as a civil engineer. She considers it of utmost importance in this age of globalisation to draw the attention of, if not the world then at least those who visit these parts, to the values that characterise the Sekler region. The Rustica house is sought out precisely because of its one-of-a-kind products, and although the elegant items of clothing are in demand primarily among women, let’s be honest: men look good as well in the traditional festive “Bocskai suit” with its decorative braiding and piping. The eight employees of the sewing centre produce not only clothing but furnishings (curtains, bedspreads, bedlinens) for guest houses.
